## Compatibility status

This page is historical guidance for older WireMock-on-Android setups, not a general setup guide
for current releases.

Before you adopt the blog post below, keep these caveats in mind:

- The original article targets a WireMock 2.x-era setup from 2016.
- WireMock 3.x is not currently a documented Android-compatible path. Recent users have reported
Android-specific runtime failures in the core project, including Jetty startup crashes and
`PathTemplate` regex initialization failures.
- Even within 2.x, Android compatibility depends on the exact version and your app's Android API
level, so validate the specific version you plan to ship instead of assuming the latest release
will work unchanged.

Relevant issues:

- [wiremock/wiremock#1388](https://github.com/wiremock/wiremock/issues/1388) - Android crashes after newer Jetty upgrades
- [wiremock/wiremock#2806](https://github.com/wiremock/wiremock/issues/2806) - `PathTemplate.SPECIAL_SYMBOL_REGEX` crash on Android in WireMock 3.8.0

## Guide by Sam Edwards

As documented by Sam Edwards in 2016,
with some effort it is now possible to run WireMock 2.x on Android.
Please see
[this blog post](https://handstandsam.com/2016/01/30/running-wiremock-on-android/) for instructions.
This guide is likely no longer applicable to the recent versions.
Treat it as a starting point for older 2.x-based experimentation rather than current-version
documentation.
