Abstract

Welcome to Horai, a region located in the Far East of Asia, which joins the Old World, New World, Arctic and Enbesa.

Explore two Horaiese population tiers — Nóngmín and Gōngrén — each with their own unique production chains, including oshizushi, tea, porcelain, and sake. Build your cities in a forgotten land shaped by sweeping change and rapid industrialization, where locals are split between clinging to custom in a desperate search for meaning, and embracing new horizons with all the fortunes and perils they promise.

Meanwhile, discover the Magnate population, the true elites of the Old World who've turned their eyes to Horai, seeking immense profits through the Foreign Trading Company, outsourcing Company Production to Horai’s cheap labor force.

What Horai becomes — a fragile dream of tradition, an engine of exploitation, or something far more unpredictable — that fate lies in your hands.

Feature Overview

In Horai

  • Discover Horai, a brand-new Anno 1800 session inspired by East Asia.
  • Horai is a land of Seasons, where torrential Monsoons pause your farm production, alternating with the Dry Season where you can refill your stockpiles.
  • Two new Population Tiers have arrived to resettle Horai — Nóngmín and Gōngrén, complete with new needs and public buildings.
  • Increase your population and collect extra money by supplying them with Streetfood stands, with more than a dozen Asia-inspired recipes.
  • Celebrate Horaiese culture with unique new Festivals.
  • Rediscover and rebuild the cultural heritage of Horai by erecting great Wonders across the land.
  • Build your own Asian Garden with a set of over 140 garden ornaments.
  • Meet and trade with James Goodwill, Trade Official and part-time Smuggler running the Eastern Trade Agency from Omega Haven, and Admiral Wu Guowei of the Tianming Empire, who seeks to reassert imperial authority from his base in Majipun.
  • Defend your islands from the Pyrphorian Navarch on Raksagarbha — a dangerous endgame foe you'll enjoy defeating. And with optional components enabled, he won’t just sit still — he’ll invade your other sessions, too.
  • Unlock new goods through the Foreign Trading Company, returning from Noblesse Oblige. Use imported products to create alternative production chains for Lightbulbs, Jewellery, and Gramophones, and boost your Company Production by strategically leveraging Trade Licenses.
  • New Random Quests and Horai-themed Items.

In the Old World

  • Investors upgrade to Magnates, a Tier 6 Old World population with their own exclusive needs and production chains, that can generate Trading Licenses to use in the Foreign Trading Company.

Other Notes

  • New Horizons is multiplayer & savegame compatible.
  • New Horizons is compatible with most major mods.
  • James Goodwill's Contraband feature will not be available in Multiplayer due to technical limitations.
  • No DLC are required to play with this mod, however there is additional content integration for most of them. Examples include Bright Harvest Tractors in Horai and Magnates needing post as a lifestyle need from Empire of the Skies

Savegame Compatibility

TL;DR: Yes, the mod is largely savegame compatible — but you may lose a significant amount of population in saves with many skyscrapers when first starting New Horizons.

The Long Story:

  • The Investors' Chocolate Need becomes a Luxury Need, resulting in a loss of 2 residents per standard Investor residence. That need is now taken by Caviar Crackers, a new need produced using goods from Horai.
  • Lifestyle Needs are now additive, and their population bonus does not scale with skyscraper levels.
  • For example, a Level 5 Investor skyscraper would now have: 50 base + 50 lifestyle + (5 × 25) skyscraper levels + (5 × 25) panorama = 350 residents.
  • The same system applies to Engineers. A fully upgraded Tier 3 Engineer skyscraper now caps at 240 residents.
  • If your save relies heavily on a large Engineer skyscraper workforce, make sure you have a population buffer before installing New Horizons.
  • To balance these changes against the later Magnate tier, skyscraper maintenance costs have been significantly reduced.

Graphics

Several buildings in the mod incorporate assets from 0 A.D., particularly from a community mod known as Rise of the East/Terra Magna/Delenda Est that since has been being included in the official 0 A.D. game. Its Graphics are usable under GPL 2.0 license and therefore our modified versions of 0 A.D. assets are also free to use. Earlier versions of the mod often used additional 0 A.D. meshes as placeholders during development. Meshes and textures used in New Horizons have often been heavily modified.

In full transparency, here are the buildings that include 0 A.D. meshes: Ume Farm, Algae Farm, Sturgeon Fishery, Clay Plaster Factory, Hemp Farm, Mulberry Farm, Soy Farm.

Additional meshes and textures have been incorporated from Sketchfab, including models from LSDWaterPipe and Valykor.
