I recently started working with github pages and found that the one default in this repo is not working with google analytics G-, but the changes proposed
<script async src="https://www.googletagmanager.com/gtag/js?id={{ site.google_analytics }}"></script> alone is enough and working. The entire script is also fine both worked for me.
