NIC Info

RealTek

My FreeBSD 14 file server has a Realtek 8168/8111 adapter on the motherboard. When connected directly to my fiber ONT, it can't quite saturate the 940 Mbps pipe:

➜ speedtest-go -s 8864
✓ Test Server: [8864] 0.00km Seattle, WA by CenturyLink
✓ Latency: 6.300092ms Jitter: 517.093µs Min: 5.897384ms Max: 7.762002ms
✓ Download: 929.19 Mbps (Used: 1175.88MB) (Latency: 14ms Jitter: 11ms Min: 5ms Max: 37ms)
✓ Upload: 568.45 Mbps (Used: 724.71MB) (Latency: 183ms Jitter: 277ms Min: 7ms Max: 821ms)

Yes, I tried more than once, with comparable results each time.

Intel Pro/1000

I happened to have an old Intel PCI card sitting around so I dropped it in:

✓ Test Server: [8864] 0.00km Seattle, WA by CenturyLink
✓ Latency: 3.55837ms Jitter: 298.94µs Min: 2.925222ms Max: 3.886655ms
✓ Download: 913.26 Mbps (Used: 1142.37MB) (Latency: 11ms Jitter: 8ms Min: 4ms Max: 35ms)
✓ Upload: 732.48 Mbps (Used: 854.50MB) (Latency: 20ms Jitter: 14ms Min: 4ms Max: 56ms)

That is substantially better.

Intel X550

I just ordered this card and I'll test after it arrives.

USG 3P

For perspective, this is the performance of a 3P on CenturyLink (PPPoE + VLAN) with IDS enabled:

✓ Test Server: [1782] 9.87km Seattle, WA (United States) by Comcast
✓ Latency: 8.407346ms Jitter: 3.61788ms Min: 4.735218ms Max: 14.204937ms
✓ Download: 70.69 Mbps (Used: 86.50MB) (Latency: 38ms Jitter: 16ms Min: 7ms Max: 60ms)
✓ Upload: 90.57 Mbps (Used: 110.30MB) (Latency: 44ms Jitter: 29ms Min: 12ms Max: 120ms)
