TLDR; The cache backend service has been rewritten from the ground up for improved performance and reliability. actions/cache now integrates with the new cache service (v2) APIs.

The new service will gradually roll out as of February 1st, 2025. The legacy service will also be sunset on the same date. Changes in these release are fully backward compatible.

We are deprecating some versions of this action. We recommend upgrading to version v4 or v3 as soon as possible before February 1st, 2025. (Upgrade instructions below).

If you are using pinned SHAs, please use the SHAs of versions v4.2.0 or v3.4.0

If you do not upgrade, all workflow runs using any of the deprecated actions/cache will fail.

Upgrading to the recommended versions will not break your workflows.

Review note (agent triage):

Risk: medium — GitHub Action major version bump from actions/cache@v4 to actions/cache@v5. Used in ci.yml on the "Load cached venv" step (poetry venv caching).

Per safe-merge policy: major version bumps require human review and are NOT eligible for auto-merge.

Likely-safe assessment: actions/cache v5 was released as a minor breaking change — mostly drops Node 20, requires Node 22 runner (default ubuntu-latest already has it). The cache key + path API is unchanged. Should work as-is for poetry venv caching.

Recommendation: merge after confirming on the workflow_dispatch trigger that the cache step still hits (look for Cache restored successfully in the lint job log). Alternatively, batch this with #37 (upload-artifact 4→6) and #38 (download-artifact 6→7) into a single combined Actions-bump release — all three are CI-only and tend to be safe in tandem.

Auto-merge eligibility: Not eligible — needs human review (major bump of CI infrastructure).
