Resolves #2989

This fixes a regression introduced in #2864.


Before the change?

  • Some data sources can panic if an error is thrown
  • CI workflows wasn't linting

After the change?

  • The cause of the panic has been resolved
  • The errors.As() pattern has been cleaned up for consistency
  • CI workflow lints
