Images of Text in Tables Are Used Instead of Semantic Table Markup on the Support Page #54

Open

Description

@brichwin

Many tables on the page are presented as images with inadequate alt-text. The tables should be coded in the proper semantic HTML. For example:

  • In the section entitled “Create fractions in linear formats,” the following image contains the alt-text “Create fractions in linear” which is inadequate to enable a screen reader to understand how to create fractions in UnicodeMath and LaTeX format: Image of a table showing the steps to create a fraction in Unicode and LaTeX formats. The first row, for UnicodeMath, shows that the input of a/(b plus c) shows a stacked fraction with a in the numerator and (b plus c) in the denominator. The second example, for LaTeX format, shows that the input to produce the same fraction is \frac{a}{b plus c}.
    Screen-shot of a table showing the steps to create a fraction in Unicode and LaTeX formats. The first row, for UnicodeMath, shows that the input of a/(b plus c) shows a stacked fraction with a in the numerator and (b plus c) in the denominator. The second example, for LaTeX format, shows that the input to produce the same fraction is \frac{a}{b plus c}.

  • In the section entitled “LaTeX equation editing examples”, the following table is included as one large image with the alt-text: “Table showing LaTeX Equation examples” which does not provide a screen reader user any instructional information on how to type mathematical expressions with LaTeX in Word.
    Screenshot of a complex table that shows 14 examples of LaTeX inputs and their resulting Built-up format for items like vectors, limits, matrix, radicals, etc.

    @jenmarsala

    I verify that this issue exists as described.

    Microsoft has a new support page for the math AutoCorrect codes: Quick start guide to Math AutoCorrect commands and symbols

    None of the symbols nor any of the Math AutoCorrect code listings are images. Real and properly marked up HTML tables are used.

    Several of the listings on the original page have been improved in the "Automatically convert expressions to professional format" section: Linear format equations using UnicodeMath and LaTeX in Word.

    Images of text / tables are still being used on the Linear format equations using UnicodeMath and LaTeX in Word page. For example:

    screenshot of an image of a table containing sample entries for making fractions in linear mode. The alt-text is simply Create Fractions in Linear
