Crash on lobby join - AMD Related? #1001
Description
I'm just trying out this game for the first time with some friends but I get a crash on joining or creating any lobby. Singleplayer, self hosted, other players... All the same crash just before it finishes loading or just as it starts showing the lobby.
There is no crashdump in the steamapps/Reactive Drop folder but I've attached windows event viewer log below.
I'd suspect this may be the same issue, though I haven't gone as far as them in troubleshooting yet: https://steamcommunity.com/app/563560/discussions/2/628941617404860002/
I've tried:
- Restarting steam
- Restarting windows
- Reinstalling GPU drivers
- Validating game files
- Reinstalling game
- Double checking theres no workshop subscriptions
- Different video settings
- Updating windows
- fastprox.dll temporary rename
- Strong language

I also had this last weekend when trying to play with friends. I got a 7800XT. Seems to stand out like a sore thumb - me being most likely the only one with an AMD gpu.

might as well try, perhaps it'd narrow the problem down - assuming it's the same issue at all

Do you have this same issue reproducing in the Alien Swarm (2010)?
andreasbalzer commentedon Mar 8, 2026
Seems this issue reproduces for me too. The game crashes either on lobby join, or in the middle of a session with me being spectator.
Edit: I also filed a bug report with AMD, providing diagnostic data.

I just installed that game and played the first map in offline training mode without issues.

Thanks for the feedback.
I was able to narrow it down with a few people. To be specific, the crash seems to occur when:
If any one of the conditions above is removed, the game runs without issues.
The original Alien Swarm doesn't expose options like HQ dynamic shadows or flashlight shadows.
I think, the most straightforward short‑term solution is to automatically grey out the options listed under point 4 when the game detects an affected GPU. This prevents players from enabling the problematic combination while keeping the rest of the settings fully accessible.
Fix to disable options that crash on AMD Navi 32 and Navi 48
