non-free font

in stacer/static/font you have Ubuntu-R.ttf which is not free by DFSG. (350kb)

Would you mind throwing that one away and using anything that is free? I
replaced the font in Debian with /usr/share/fonts/opentype/league-spartan/LeagueSpartan-Regular.otf

this would allow the application to have no Canonical/Ubuntu branding...

Hello, yes we can do that! I haven't touched the original design and assets of the project but I agree about changing to a free font.

I received some feedback about adding the light theme back so I will release a 1.7.1 version with it when it will be done :)

I choose Rubik because the font was close to original Ubuntu with a bit more tech feeling. It's also SIL Open Font License so I guess it's alright :) I will add back a light theme and release the version later on. Thanks

oh well, couldn't pick a font already packaged, see apt-cache search ^fonts- .. i guess someone wants to package rubik font, then depend on it...

Oh, well I need to depend on a existing fonts- package then, but fonts-rubik doesn't exist. Also, packaging on Fedora or Arch would require some extra steps to make that work. I don't know :/

most have it: https://repology.org/project/fonts%3Aleague-spartan/versions those who don't can easily package it.

you don't absolutely NEED to, but if you would, everyones life would be easier. you can also keep it as it is, go ahead with a non existing font, even choose another non-free font, anything. it's just for debian, i need to keep repacking as long as it's not good for debian.

I understand, will have a look at it but honestly, it's way more simpler to have a bundled font similar on every distro. But isn't Rubik correct now? It's a free SIL font so you don't need to repack by replacing it with league spartan?

correct but what if someone else wants to use this shared resource (fonts libraries) in debian we devendor and debundle. reason: if there is newer version or security fix, only do it at one place. not find millions of copies to patch them all... understandable?

also font as added: we prefer build it from source. not binary blob.

wise man once said: if you can not build it from source you not supposed (or entitled) to use it ;)

I understand that if every software depends on fonts-* packages, we will gain some space but that means it should be like that on every distro :/ I'm not maintaining AUR nor Fedora but I have no clue how to implement that for every packaging tool. But I get the point, I'll need a bit of time to change that as I haven't done resource dependencies like that before (or maybe do you know a nice Qt project already doing that for multi distro support?)

I didn't understand this phrase but I get the point, the font is currently a blob 😄

Anyway Stacer can be built from source easily currently and hopefully the font dependency will not cause some issues on other distro. Any draft PR are welcome on that :)

if you dont specify a font qt will fall back to whatever the system has as default, other example qt app: https://github.com/agateau/sfxr-qt

this means it can look different on windows, macos, linux distribution (even between different distributions). i think this would be the best to do...

Alright I see, I prefer defining a preferred font then like spartan, will look into that (btw this repo is not accessible to me)
