Topic: Metop-C AMSU Channel 8 retrieval problem

Date/Time Issued: January 12, 2024 1759Z

Product(s) or Data Impacted: Metop-C MIRS and HEAP products

Date/Time of Initial Impact: January 7, 2024 1200Z

Date/Time of Expected End: January 12, 2024 1500Z

Length of Event: 5 days

Details/Specifics of Change: The noise level in Metop-C AMSU channel 8 (55.5 GHz
HPol) has been increasing since about January 7 and has been steadily worsening. As
of January 12 less than half of the granules are able to pass NOAA’s internal quality
checks. Products dependent in this channel will be seriously degraded. This primarily
impacts products from HEAP and MIRS.
The lower threshold of channel 8 warm counts was adjusted this morning, starting
with orbit M3.D24012.S1305.E1446.B2688788.SV. This is expected to correct the
problem.
