Hydration

Just as the name states, hydration roughly means how much water do your bodily cells have at disposal. Hydration is measured in %, and therefore ranges from 0% to 100%.

How to replenish hydration?

There are currently 2 ways players can replenish their lost hydration:

  • Drinking directly from water body
  • Using water canteen

The former is pretty intuitive. You walk towards a lake, river, sea or whatever. You then right click the water block and voila! You have gained 5% of hydration back!

As mentioned, you can also use water canteens. Water canteens are basically a portable source of water, whereever you go. They are more convenient than using vanilla water bottles. Water canteens can store at most 512 mb of water (1/2 of vanilla bucket for dummies). That means you get around 16 sips per full canteen.

Natural Drain

Hydration is a suspect to natural drain. The natural hydration rate is around 0.001% per tick, or 0.02% per second. That means, you can survive around 5 000 real life seconds without drinking water under normal circumstances. This rate can be configured under the hydration category in the mod config.

Excessive Sweating

The natural drain is also affected by your body heat. Excess body heat (above 75% of the gauge) will result in increased rate of sweating, which in turn multiplies your natural hydration rate by 4. This means that you can stay at most just around 1250 seconds, or around half an hour in the desert without drinking water.

Nether

Also, an additional hydration drain is applied when the player is in nether. This additional drain applied is equal to 0.006% per tick, or 0,12% per hour. Combined with the natural drain, you can stay at most around 714 seconds in the nether without dying from dehydratation.

Lava

The last notable modifier in this category is lava. Being in lava places a huge hydration drain, equal to 0,5% per tick, or 2% per second. This can completely dehydratate you in 50 seconds (which is under a minute!). That means fire resistance potions are no longer a life-saver when falling into lava.

Consequences

Being dehydratated makes your body weak. You don't even feel like you're being alive. It's like you are just floating above the ground, but in fact, you are slowly crawling towards your death

Yeah, that guy was absolutely true. The lack of hydration generally inflicts weakness combined with slowness when under 40%. When your hydration is at critical point (15%) you start to feel "dizzy" and you are not strong enough even to knock down a log. When you are on the verge of dehydratation (5%), you start to receive damage. A relatively high amount of damage, able to kill you under 5 seconds!
