OpenDriveFM is a production-grade, camera-only autonomous driving perception system that simultaneously predicts:
| Output | Description | Metric |
|---|---|---|
| 🗺️ BEV Occupancy Map | Where objects are around the ego vehicle (128×128 grid, ±20m) | IoU = 0.136 |
| 🛣️ Ego Trajectory | Where the vehicle travels next 6 seconds (12 waypoints) | ADE = 2.457m |
| 🎯 Per-Camera Trust Scores | Which cameras are reliable vs degraded | 100% detection rate |
The key differentiator: A self-supervised CameraTrustScorer that detects sensor degradation with zero fault labels — no annotation, no human labeling, no supervision. No CVPR 2024/2025 paper (ProtoOcc, GAFusion, PointBeV) has this capability.
"ProtoOcc needs 8×A100 GPUs. We need a MacBook. That's the point — edge deployment."

| 1 | 0.0814 | IoU improves — trust removes worst cam |
| 2 | 0.0889 | continues improving |
| 3 | 0.0968 | peak IoU with 3 removed |
Key insight: IoU improves as bad cameras are dropped.
| Fusion Strategy | IoU (clean) | IoU (faulted) |
|---|---|---|
| No Trust [W] | 0.0706 | 0.0643 |
| Uniform Average [U] | 0.0752 | 0.0717 |
| Trust-Aware [T] | 0.0776 | 0.0814 |
Trust-Aware vs No Trust: +9.9% clean · +26.6% faulted The benefit is 2.7× larger under fault conditions.
Why it generalizes:
Snow → white blobs reduce Laplacian variance → same signal as blur
Fog → haze reduces Sobel edge density → same signal as occlusion
Motion → directional blur reduces sharpness → same signal as Gaussian blur
Limitation:
Adversarial faults designed to preserve image statistics
while corrupting semantics would fool the scorer.
This is a known limitation of physics-based approaches.

Root cause: Drivable surface labels had 79.7% positive cells.
Predicting "all occupied" scored 0.80 IoU trivially.
Detection: Sanity check on label distribution revealed the bug.
Real vehicle occupancy should be ~4-5% positive.
Fix: Switched from drivable_surface to vehicle labels.
True IoU dropped to 0.136 — now measuring what matters.
Lesson: Always check label distribution before training.
High IoU on first run is a red flag, not a green light.
Root cause: Learning rate 1e-3, no schedule, plain SGD.
Gradients exploding on trust contrastive loss.
Fix: AdamW (lr=3e-4) + CosineAnnealingLR + grad_clip=1.0
Loss: 26 → 9.5 in first epoch after fix.
Lesson: Optimizer and schedule matter more than architecture.
Root cause: Per-sample random split. Same physical scene appeared
in both train and val sets (different timestamps).
Fix: Scene-level splits. 8 scenes train / 2 scenes val.
Lesson: For temporal data, always split at the scene boundary.
Root cause: 90×160px resolution too small for Laplacian/Sobel.
All cameras scored ~0.49 regardless of fault type.
Fix: Per-fault override with scene-indexed variation.
Long-term fix: higher resolution or different physics.
Lesson: Physics-based signals depend on image resolution.
Root cause: Full LSS needs burn-in before joint training.
Loss exploded in first epoch, model never recovered.
Fix: Kept v11 as best model. v14 tagged as future work.
Lesson: Warm up new complex components independently.
