Building cppyy and its dependencies from source for a custom CPU architecture

Hello!

I'm planning to build cppyy from source along with all its dependencies, as the target system has a non-standard CPU architecture.

Could you please advise:

1. What are the required dependencies for a complete build of cppyy?
2. Where can I find the source code for these dependencies (official repos or mirrors)?
3. Are there any special considerations when building for custom architectures?

Ad 1): Only requirement is a C++ compiler and a Python interpreter; things like zlib are built in. Cling is pulled in using the create_src_directory.py script.
Ad 2): Most everything is in the cppyy repos; except for Cling, which is pulled from the ROOT releases (https://root.cern.ch/download/), since the Cling project has no releases itself.
Ad 3): There's a whole lot of custom stuff in the ROOT/Cling cmake files, in particular setting macro's for available features. If a platform goes unrecognized, stuff will happen. On the good side, I don't think that things will silently build something incorrect. On the bad side, it may be quite a rabbit hole to find out what to change to enable macro's etc. (I'm thinking about eg. Linux/ARM support for example: there were some subtle problems with macro defines b/c non-standard ones were used.)

I’m trying to build cppyy-cling from source. Before building, I explicitly specified the system (x86_64, linux) as the closest available. Made the following adjustments:

In the root CMakeLists.txt, added:

add_compile_definitions(R__LINUX)
add_compile_definitions(R__UNIX)

Updated config.guess for the target system.

At the final stage, the build fails with:

error: unknown target triple 'e2k-unknown-linux-gnu', please use -triple or -arch
Attempted fixes:

Modified CMakeLists.txt:

add_compile_options(-triple e2k-linux-gnu)
set(LLVM_TARGET_TRIPLE "e2k-linux-gnu" CACHE STRING "Target triple for e2k")

Manually edited Triple.cpp to set *this = Triple("e2k-linux-gnu"). (1165 line)

Question:
Why e2k-linux-gnu? Because:

$ gcc --version
lcc:1.26.20:Jun--6-2023:e2k-v4-linux
gcc (GCC) 9.3.0 compatible
$ gcc -dumpmachine
e2k-linux-gnu

Am I missing something critical? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Right, so that's in Clang proper and the triple is needed for codegen in the JIT, so it's not just a build issue, it will also be a run-time issue. If there's no existing architecture that comes close (https://clang.llvm.org/docs/CrossCompilation.html#general-cross-compilation-options-in-clang), then the JIT won't work either.

Is there a package manager for that architecture and does it have Clang pre-packaged? If yes, I'd install that and see what they use for the triple, then modify the cmake files of cppyy_backend to use that target.

Not sure what you mean with "an adapter"? In the end the go/no-go, is simply whether Clang's JIT can produce binary code for the platform. If not, cppyy will not work, even if it builds.

Probably not. For sure the LLVM version needs to match exactly as LLVM likes to do major updates to its APIs between versions, which is probably doable. But Cling also still has patches to LLVM that haven't been upstreamed (and probably never will be). Some of these may not relevant for cppyy, but I've never explored it.

For a brief while, Cling could build on stock LLVM. This is why there's the builtin_llvm option. I don't know whether setting that to OFF in turns switches on some pre-processor macro's in Cling to help things compile, but it might. It probably needs llvm-config accessible through $PATH (or whatever means on your system) to find LLVM.
