Steam fails to keep me logged in at Boot and "Return to Game Mode" Help?

Describe the bug

Fresh install on HP Victus. install was good and i made sure to update all my apps and do a software update, with reboot after each step to make sure everything works before moving forward. but steam wont "remember" my login. everytime i a boot the OS i have to re-login into steam. "Returning to Game Mode" doesnt work. just makes the screen go black and yes, i have to relogin into steam.

What did you expect to happen?

I expected to log in the one time

I am also sadly experiencing this issue.

Gaming Mode doesn't boot AT ALL on any SteamOS recreations on my Victus at the moment, it just hangs on a black screen or the boot screen.

Whether I trigger it from power-on or in Desktop Mode.

It started happening to me only last week. I tried a clean reinstall and it didn't help.

I'm having the same issue for the past few days (not exactly sure if it's since I updated to Bazzite 42). I have my computer set to boot on GNOME and I have added Steam as a startup application. I have tried disabling auto-login to see if changes anything, but it did not improve.

Same here. I upgraded to Bazzite 42 by rebasing on the Bazzite 42 DX image and everything went fine, except that steam now "forgets" my credentials every time the client restarts. I don't know if it was different in the previous version but the steam client is participating in "Steam Deck Stable" client beta. It also resets my configured timezone to Pacific Standard Time on client restart.

I just realized that my Steam install has the same symptoms as yours: Timezone set to PST (instead of CET) and enrolled the Client Beta Participation listing Steam Deck even though I'm not on a Deck image.

I figured out that the Steam Shortcut in the Desktop Launcher targets /usr/bin/bazzite-steam which is a wrapper script that checks the environment and acts on certain conditions. I'm not sure what the purpose is exactly but targeting the steam binary directly (/usr/bin/steam) turns the behavior back to "normal". Regards

Something must have changed in the last stable release of Bazzite (42.20250501) as Steam remembered my credentials and logged me in today.

This is also happening to me. Did a fresh install, and updated to the latest version. I have to re-log in every time and "Gaming mode" never works. Sometimes it will remember my account name, but never lets me back into the account without signing back in.
