Why is URL length limited to 2048 characters?

I would like to shorten very long URLs (e.g. routes from BRouter with many POIs). These URLs have up to 5000 characters.

The 2048-character limit isn't a hard rule set by the project itself, it's more of a widely accepted standard because many browsers, servers, and proxies might not handle URLs longer than that reliably. Technically, URLs can be longer (and some systems support that), but sticking to 2048 characters helps avoid unexpected issues with compatibility.
If you’re dealing with something like BRouter routes that generate really long URLs, one workaround could be to store the data server-side and just generate a short URL that points to it. That way you’re not relying on the full data being in the URL.
