The need for a release

Sumatra 3.5.2 was released at 2023-10-25. It's been a long time and a lot has happened since then. In my opinion, build 17127 works so well that I would like to see a release soon.

I understand the incremental development, but ... for example, in the sense of professional software distribution, I believe a release is necessary.

I would like to strongly encourage this discussion.

Not only because of CVE-2026-23512 (=> https://github.com/sumatrapdfreader/sumatrapdf/security/advisories/GHSA-rqg5-gj63-x4mv) and CVE-2026-23951 (=> https://github.com/sumatrapdfreader/sumatrapdf/security/advisories/GHSA-hj4w-c5x8-p2hv) do I hope for a release soon and recommend a feature freeze.

As a user, I would like to add my support for a new release.
I came here to report a bug, but I didn't realize that the version I am using is over 2 years old! So the bug may be already fixed.
I would also like to use Sumatra at work, but I am nervous to do that if it has security vulnerabilities that have not been addressed in the release.

All known open core issues like DjVu security issues are fixed in pre-release thus safer than a out of date released one.
The major reason for no "official" release is very high cost getting approvals from Microsoft EV security middlemen.
This is the same as Adobe and Microsoft update between releases but to different commercial tunes, as they have assurance teams who then having failed to spot problems need to release again and again often once a month.

Currently there are a lot of debugging going on to reduce potential future problems thus no point in releasing half baked fixes like the big boys do.

I think most people are working with 3.5.2. From a security perspective, this is terrible ... A release represents a state of affairs that can certainly be improved further if new information becomes available ...

I totally get the push for a stable release, especially with those security fixes sitting in the pre-releases. At the same time, I really appreciate the devs' focus on stability over rushing out something 'half-baked.' For anyone on the fence, the 3.6 pre-releases honestly feel more stable and feature-rich than the current 3.5.2 stable anyway - might be worth the jump if you're waiting on specific fixes!
