HTML repr with many data vars

What is your issue?

I've been working with Datasets with 1000+ data vars. The HTML repr is extremely slow.

My current solution is to change the config to use the text at the top of the notebook, and then kick myself & restart when I forget.

Would folks be OK with us falling back to the text repr automatically for, say, >100 data vars?

The html repr is actually quite heavy to load in the browser: it contains the text repr (as fallback for when the html/css is not fully supported) + the whole css + the whole html (including all the collapsed variable attrs and array reprs). I'm not surprised that it is very slow for that huge number of variables.

Yes or alternatively have an upper limit in the html repr itself, beyond which the number of included variables is truncated.

That is also a good use case for #8171: we could imagine some pagination or auto-expand solution with dynamic requests to the Python side.
