Produce a plan for importing Gold Rush match keys into POD

Ian Bogus of the ReCaP partnership would like to have Gold Rush match keys generated for records in POD, to help them find matches for bibliographic records in different libraries. Such matches would be useful for a number of analytics tasks identified in our user stories. The match key generation algorithm is published (a description of the algorithm as of December 2024 is at https://coalliance.org/sites/default/files/GoldRush-Match_KeyDecember2024.doc ), and thus keys could be generated and associated with, or included in, bibliographic records upon import (perhaps as part of the normalization process) or after the fact for records already in the system, either for certain institutions that request it, or all institutions. Produce a plan evaluating the feasibility, benefits, required resources, overhead, and cost, of adding Gold Rush keys to records in POD. Also note how an analytics dashboard or program might find and use them.

I asked folks in Gold Rush if there were conventions about where the match keys were kept in their data. I heard back from George Machovec "it is kept separately in the system. However, at the point of export we do allow the matchkey to be included in both MARC XML and Excel formats. In the MARC XML case we stuff the matchkey in a 59X field (we use 597)." So if we wanted to keep the Gold Rush key directly in our MARC XML exports, that could be one place to put it (assuming no one else wants to export other local notes in a 597 field). There are other ways match keys could be made available in POD data, but this would be one simple way to do it that some Gold Rush institutions use.
