Yes, I agree we should switch to the official version; my preferred version would be fork their directory and then build that fork into PROTEUS. This way we can stay close to the main version, but control it. We have to get a bit more comfortable with forks in this way. Or do you see another technical solution? |

@timlichtenberg, I have forked the MetOffice socrates repo into the FW organisation, so we can track issues relating to this migration process. So far this is just organisational, and JANUS/AGNI still depend on the socrates repo on my personal GitHub profile. |

We use SOCRATES for modelling radiative transfer in AGNI and JANUS - within the PROTEUS framework. This currently draws from my repo, which exists because SOCRATES has not historically been publicly available.
The MetOffice has now made SOCRATES available on GitHub: you can find it here.
We should consider creating a branch of their repo in the FWL GitHub organisation. The changes in my repo can then be synced into this branch. On one hand: doing this requires a modest amount of work. On the other hand: this would provide long-term stability for our codebase by ensuring we maintain an up-to-date SOCRATES version, while not explicitly depending on external repos.
Open to suggestions/thoughts. Also happy to hear from interested volunteers willing to undertake the task.
