Thoughts on merge&squash #5

Description

@Eothred

If we merge&squash, will the commit author be preserved? If not then that is perhaps an issue (I'm not sure how important it is).

I wonder also if merge&squash will be hard for non git-savvy to work against. We don't all work directly towards the github repository, I suppose most labs keep a clone elsewhere (e.g. SNS use Gitlab, ESS use Bitbucket). If you squash then you break the history, so updating the clone (and branches) requires more expertise I believe?

On a related note, I know that the Homebrew project does merge&squash.
