more sensible autoscaling - suggest autoscaling all vpol together and all hpol together
as separate autoscales. from what i see so far, that is more useful than by string. A
possiblity would be to scale the layers as a group, for example TV and BV with separate
scales, but i think that is less useful. Another possibility is to scale to some noise
level - prob too complicated
