Write generated files to document root directly

Would it be useful to add an option to write the generated files directly to the document root?

For myself, it would save time. I want to work on a pull request for that, but first wanted to check if it would make sense.

Another feature I am thinking of is adding a specific type of file to an existing plug-in. e.g. adding a settings.php file or db/install.php.
