Cannot File Manager Error #760
-
|
When selecting the File Manager option from a saved connection's dropdown menu, I receive this error: "File Manager Error Try again in a moment Could not mount sftp://[connection]: volume doesn't implement mount" This happened with the .deb installer source. Out of curiosity I attempted the same action with the Flatpak release. There was no error! Remote and local file browsing commenced, although it was difficult to navigate given all the permission hoops inherent to it. Regular terminal connection works on both versions of the app. Same connection details on both versions as well. |

Hi @DrewUniverse and thanks for the report. When using the Debian version, in Preferences > File Management, do you see the option to enable/disable built-in file manager? Which desktop environment are you using? You need GIO/GVFS to use linux file managers like Nautilus/Dolphin. Otherwise please switch to the built-in file manager (the same one enabled by default in the Flatpak build) |

Thanks for the quick response. I'm using KDE Plasma (via Kubuntu 25.10). On setting "Always use Built-in File Manager," I receive a new error. The display comes up for local and remote now, but there's a small popup stating "no authentication methods available." It seems like there's a second issue at play here? I can also pick up this GIO/GVFS thing to try fixing Dolphin aspect. |

Can you share the your ~/.ssh/config block for the connection? (Hide the ip address) Also please run the app with the --verbose flag and share the log.
In Dolphin verify you can browse the remote host via sftp:

I couldn't reproduce the issue. Do you have any other servers with password authentication? If you do can you try with that one too? |

This is the only server I have access to. Trying to think.. does SSH Pilot have any dependencies? I could try reinstalling such packages. |

All dependencies are automatically installed, but you can try running sudo apt -f install. Or you can add the debian repository (see the readme) and update sshpilot to v4.4.0 |

This led me down a rabbit hole of finding GUI software to manage .deb packages the way I'd manage software on Windows. Thank you for accidentally helping with that. no changes with the suggested command, predictably. Following your terminal instructions for install, I am met with the same error as the .deb packaged I fetched before. I'm really scratching my head here, wondering if something's wrong with my general setup (by me or otherwise). It's a fresh install of Kubuntu from a few weeks ago, though, so I can't explain why the file manager works in the Flatpak but not the .deb package (I'm used to the inverse outcome with a few other programs). |

Thanks for trying that. Totally baffling. |

Same result: on relaunch, no authentication methods available. Just to rule it out.. am I using the software correctly? I double-click the connection first, establishing contact in the terminal. Then I right-click the connection, choosing Manage Files. Should I be doing this any differently? |

Yes absolutely. You're using it correctly. |

Have you saved the password or type it every time? |

It's saved. I have gone into the connection edit screen to affirm I have the right password entered, no empty spaces in front or back. No changes, saved anyway, tried again before going manual - suddenly it is working. My turn to be baffled. X_X I can't explain it, and of course I forgot to run in verbose mode because I'm heading out the door. I almost rather have this error hanging over my head while I'm in the car for the next hour. I'm going to try to reproduce the issue when I get back. latent thought as I'm grabbing my keys.. I did notice there were multiple tabs open of the file manager. Would a second tab of file manager, on the same connection, cause the authentication error? Edit: "seemingly" working? I can nav up in directories, but not back down. For example, I can go from home/drew to home, but double-clicking that "drew" subfolder does nothing. |

Now I am experiencing an error where I cannot install packages from .deb files. Unclear if this is because I picked up Synaptic. I am beside myself. I will try to sort out this error. |

For the error from Discover (app center for Kubuntu), I was able to fix it with Back on track, I was able to reinstall the original .deb package I picked up. (v 4.3.9-1). I was able to reproduce the authentication error! Note that despite doing a "full removal" in Synaptic, my Connection info and credentials were still listed. I think I've figured out the behavior, because I've been able to reproduce this several times now.
Here is the full log of that. (more to say under this log) With regards to the directory navigation. Tried navigating up and down a bit; it broke pretty fast. First nav "up" and then "down" a success. Going up again, the system hanged (second to last line below). I hope these logs are helpful. |

This is expected behavior since your connections are stored in ~/.ssh/config and that file is not exclusive to SSH Pilot. Please try this: use kwallet or kwalletmanager (install if necessary), find and remove your stored password. |

@DrewUniverse I finally managed to reproduce this bug. A fix is being applied. You should be able to use the file manager with no issue when v4.5.1 is out. |

Here I was expecting to return from a short break ready to tackle the next troubleshooting step! I have downloaded and installed the new version, 4.5.1, from the .deb installer file. It just works! Thank you for being on this strange rabbit hole with me. I'm super grateful. |

Thanks much for reporting this. It was a critical bug and without your help i wouldn't have noticed it. |
