Spartan support

Have you considered adding Spartan support ?

I think it would great if optionally one could serve the same content as both gemini:// and spartan:// . That would be a nice enhancement for those who want to make their content available for old computers etc.

It would make everyone's life simpler if instead of needing a separate server this was just one additional option in agate. Kind of a builtin proxy if you want. Just serve the Gemini pages and convert encoding to ASCII on the fly, accepting that some things like accents etc might be lost.

As you surely know the implementation of Spartan is super simple by design, no encryption etc.

I’m not opposed to this, though I don’t plan to implement it myself. If someone wants to fork Agate to make a compatible Spartan server (or combination Gemini + Spartan server), I would be happy to provide advice and assistance as needed. If they show it can be done in a fairly simple and maintainable way, I would also consider merging it into the main Agate project.

I don’t think this is necessary. Spartan supports non-ASCII encodings, and defaults to UTF-8 for text MIME-types:

A status of "2" indicates that the resource was successfully received, understood, and accepted. The mimetype should contain the MIME of the response document. It may also include a charset parameter to specify an encoding for the document. The default encoding for "text/*" documents should be assumed to be UTF-8.

I am unfortunately not experimented enough with Rust to try to do it myself yet but I'll surely keep it on my list of projects :-)

BTW, I believe that a separate server wouldn't make sense. I think for end-users who want their texts to be available to a large majority it would be more useful to have a server listening on both ports and serving both protocols at the same time.

From my short look at the spartan spec I think the main compatibility problem would be the meta-presets, since the gemini and spartan response lines seem to be incompatible.
