Embed track number + casting support for the app

New user here, and already impressed with how pinepods embedds metadata in downloaded episodes, it already suits my needs much better than audiobookshelf or podfetch.

I use an external player (Emby) quite a lot, which relies fully on embedded metadata. The episodes currently get sorted by title rather than published date. This works alright for episodes that are numbered, but whenever there is a bonus episode or a feed drop or any other break from the regular numbering, those episodes end up out of order.

• If possible, I would appreciate if track number was an embedded field.
• it would also be helpful if this was an "absolute" track number (total number of tracks including non-numbered episodes)

Unrelated, support in the app for casting to devices including upnp/airplay would mean I could get rid of my external player altogether for podcast usage. I use speakers that don't support the casting options basically all podcast apps support (not sure what that actual protocol is. Chromecast, Miracast?), and only have support for upnp. Adding this to pinepods would set it apart from others.

Hey! Good thoughts. What do you think on track numbering? Just base them off publish date? Newest episode downloaded gets the highest track number? I believe it would have to be like that. Because of some limitations:

• Pinepods allows for downloading individual episodes, and if you download an old episode, then a new one, we can't retroactively track the existing file. We can only numerically track the newest one. What happens in a podcast that has 100 episodes you download episode number 27, and then go download episode 82? Do we track them like that? LIke audio metadata those get numbered 27 and 82? Or do we track them track number 1 and 2? If the latter, then what do we do with episodes in the future that could be downloaded in between those?
• Podcasts not being a static medium like musical albums makes it tougher to numerically track because they are ever changing. If you download an entire podcast it's likely in the future more episodes will be downloaded. So the newest episode CAN'T be episode number 1. Due to the fact that in a week it's unlikely that will be the newest one anymore.

Numbering based on date with the latest episode having the highest number is exactly how I would personally want it set up. And if you download 27 and 82 the downloaded files should have track number 27 and 82 rather than 1 and 2, exactly because of the seasons you list
Basically fully agreeing with you on all accounts, for the same reasons as you state.
