cinnamon: brightness slider missing

Firstly, thanks for the amazing work! Not sure if this is related to issue #92 (already flagged), but just installed 22.1 yesterday on both a PC tower and an old 2009 macbook pro laptop (which was already running 22), and on both, the little screen Brightness slider is missing (but on the macbook, the keyboard light slider is showing, however).

Can you try running:

gsettings set org.cinnamon.settings-daemon.plugins.power backlight-helper-force true

Then log out and back in.

Thanks for the suggestion, mtwebster. I ran the script in the terminal on both the laptop and pc, and then logged in/out and also restarted, but unfortunately nothing seemed to change.

Is the brightness slider/tab missing in Power settings also?

Please see if one of the following work:

csd-backlight-helper --set-brightness 150 -b firmware
# or...
csd-backlight-helper --set-brightness 150 -b platform
# or...
csd-backlight-helper --set-brightness 150 -b raw

Can you also try gathering some debug info:

killall csd-power
killall csd-power ## (needs to be killed twice)
csd-power --verbose

and paste the output.

Apologies for the delay. I am away from the computers but managed to get someone to test the PC for me (HP PC AiO with an additional second 24" monitor).

Firstly, the 'Brightness' tab on the power settings was not there.

Attached also are images showing output after running the csd-backlight-helper commans, and a text editor doc showing the results of the verbose command.

Was there ever backlight support for your AIO? That's generally regarded as a 'desktop' PC and doesn't support backlight adjustment.

The laptop should support this - I'm curious what those commands will output on that machine (and the log output from csd-power --verbose).
