Description
Initializing MPI by calling MPI_Init rather than MPI_Init_thread requires that the process be single-threaded (it is exactly equivalent to supplying MPI_THREAD_SINGLE to the latter function).
This is vaguely alluded to in #2 by @jeffhammond.
