Connecting the dots with Version numbering: 2.1? 1.0.0 beta? 0.40.0 beta?

Hi,

I'm a little confused regarding version numbering.

There is a blog post talking about file format 2.1 stable was released:

and when looking here at github there is 1.0.0 beta and 0.40.0 beta

https://lance.org/format/file/versioning/ doesn't really help either... maybe its only outdated but it talks about 2.1 unstable..

How does this match to another?

(of course lancedb is something different with other versioning... https://github.com/lancedb/lancedb/tags)

Hi, 2.1 is our file format version, which is stable and part of our public API. For example, you can create a Lance table with storage version 2.1, and we guarantee it will remain stable with no breaking changes at the storage level.

In short, for each major version, we maintain a release branch and cut fix versions as needed. The -beta suffix indicates preview versions, not stable releases.

They are not connected. File format version doesn’t relate to package version; it’s more feature-based. More details can be found at https://github.com/lance-format/lance/milestone/9

And of course, it’s a breaking change for Lance to bump the new file format version as default, so it always results in a major version bump for the crate.
