Add to Today without adding schedule?

I noticed that in a recent version, adding a task to "Today" also always schedules it with today's date. Is there any way to disable that? It gets confusing for me because it means I'm not easily able to differentiate between tasks that have a real due date vs. tasks that had a date automatically added.
