Gadgetbridge support ?

Hi

Just read today an article on the blog of HA/Open Home Foundation about all progresses made recently in the Android version. It states that now it reports data of your wearable devices for sports. Unhappy it’s only for closed apps or using Google proprietary things but no support at all for the great open-source app for wearables: Gadgetbridge. GB already allows since a long time share of real-time health datas with third parties apps on the same device so it should not be a big work to get these datas in HA companion no ?

Thanks and I would be happy to help but unhappy my knowledges in Android programming are zero :( I'm still struggling to write an integration for HA so far !

Gadgetbridge should be supported using the intent system https://gadgetbridge.org/internals/automations/intents/

both sending and receiving are supported by the app.

We also already have users utilizing the feature for this purpose: #1292 (comment)

Sorry for late answer but after investigating the Intent lists of GB, there is no way to get steps count from the gadget connected at GB, you can control the sync between gadget and gb, trigger a db export in the phone, send notifications but no way to access fitness data from the gadget :(

I stumbled over the same flaw you found already. My way to get the data is... crude and evil, but it works.

One of them is the ... special way to get the data you are looking for. My case is for my not even yet supported in nightly SR08 ring, but it can be modified to anything the app writes into it's database.
In theory it's just this: Send a intent to the GadgetBridge App to save the database to a defined in app path. In my case a SMB/Synology Drive share on my NAS and from there get the data off the database directly. Ugly, but works fine here.

Thanks for the share and I had thought about that solution ages ago but it's way too overcomplicated, export whole database each time and implies also you have to read the whole DB to extract datas each time... Might still give it a try if I find an easy way to get db file accessible at HA (I used Nextcloud sync in the past).

Problem here is that you cannot send data to HA that lies in the past. Thus I take the newest entry only and that every 5 min to stay at least close to recent with my values.

Not sure if by “Google proprietary” you mean Health Connect, but in case you aren’t aware: Gadgetbridge → Health Connect → HA Android sensors works today for fitness/health data (steps/HR/sleep/etc.). Gadgetbridge needs a nightly build to sync to Health Connect, and the HA app can read Health Connect as sensors.

Caveat: this does rely on Health Connect (Android/Google health data layer). On Android 14+ it’s built-in; on Android 13 and lower it usually means installing the Health Connect app.

If the goal is to avoid Health Connect entirely, it likely needs more than HA-side work — Gadgetbridge would need a stable health/fitness API/export (or some Health Connect alternative datastore) that HA could consume.

Impatient to try it when it'll be avalaible ;) Don't want to try the nightly build to avoid any risks to mess my existing GB database !
