These experiments were carried out with a group of 30 volunteers within an age bracket of 19-48 years. Each person performed six activities (WALKING, WALKING_UPSTAIRS, WALKING_DOWNSTAIRS, SITTING, STANDING, LAYING) wearing a smartphone (Samsung Galaxy S II) on the waist. Using its embedded accelerometer and gyroscope, the measurements captured 3-axial linear acceleration and 3-axial angular velocity at a constant rate of 50Hz. The obtained
dataset was partitioned into two sets, where 70% of the volunteers was selected for generating the training data and 30% the test data.
Run_Analysis function accepts files as function variables or defaults to downloaded files used for this analysis. Purpose being, that future Samsung wearable datasets could be easily cleaned using this function. Features list for test datasets was used, as factors, to name the test variables. Mean and Standard Deviation were then extracted from test variables and merged with their test subject and test activities data. Features list for training datasets was used, as factors, to name the training variables. Mean and Standard Deviation were then extracted from training variables and merged with their training subject and training activities data. Merged Test dataset and Merged Training dataset were then merged into a combined test and training dataset called mergedData. Check to see if Activity is still in default integer format, if so, convert to descriptive names from activity_labels list. Finally prepares a new cleaned data set by first grouping data by subject and activity, and then summarising the new data set to show the mean by each column. Lastly, the new tidied data set is returned from the function.
