[Bug] Order of bookmarks changes on its own

Describe the bug

After some time of using browser I enter "Bookmarks" menu and notice that bookmarks are in the different order than they used to be. It has been an issue for quite a long time.

How to Reproduce

I don't know how to reproduce this bug. I can just notice different order of bookmarks, despite the fact I didn't moved them in that way.

I simply add bookmarks, add some of them as favourites to the main screen, change order of bookmarks by myself, open favourites and bookmarks from "Bookmarks" menu (from three-dot button).

Associated settings: I have "Search suggestions" turned off, so I search bookmarks by going to "Bookmarks" and using magnifying glass icon.

Expected behavior

Bookmarks stay in the same order - the same I put them initially.

Thanks for reaching @krwow. I haven't been able to reproduce what you're seeing, so I'd like to gather a bit more info if possible.

• When you say the order of bookmarks has changed, do you mean that the same screen is showing them in a different order? Or are they ordered differently in different parts of the app (e.g., Favorites on the New Tab page vs. the Bookmarks list)?
• Do you have features like Sync & Backup enabled?
• How often does this happen? Is there any specific action after which you notice the order changing?

Thanks for reply, @cmonfortep. I'll try to add as much details as possible, but the way to reproduce this bug is still not known for me.

1. Different order happens in the bookmarks list and only there (three-dots button on address bar, then "Bookmarks" item from menu list). I can see that some bookmarks about the same topic were next to each other, but after some time there are some other bookmarks between them.
2. No, I don't use "Sync & Backup" feature. I just export bookmarks to file quite often and sometimes change order of bookmarks manually in "Bookmarks" view. I also seldom add/remove items from "Favorites" on the new tab page (both as new or from existing bookmarks) or change order of these - maybe one of these actions triggers this bug.
3. It's hard to say, let's say once every two weeks, but that's just an approximation... At this point I cannot tell, what makes this bookmarks change their order. I'll try to investigate this, but I was hoping that maybe in code something can be found at this point.

I also reinstalled and set up app nearly from scratch, I have just imported bookmarks. I'll keep on keeping eye on issue after that.

I can confirm that issue is still present in version 5.247.0 and seems to be associated with the fact I was changing order of bookmarks on "Bookmarks" screen.

It is unfortunately not reproducible every time - some time ago it was just fine, but the next time after some dragging and dropping of bookmarks order of some not moved was changed. I think it is always not more than one change, one position up or down. E.g. as it can be seen on screenshot below, one of the bookmarks with the green icon is not directly below the others.

Thanks, I've been trying this week to rearrange my bookmarks from time to time to validate if there's any side effect in others. So far I haven't been able to repro. It's true I've detected favicons re-render, and some of them get into a temporary state where we only see the placeholder, showing the letter. Just scrolling or entering the screen fixes the issue, so it's minor. We will investigate the favicon issue, but on your original report we still can't reproduce.

I'm going to keep this open in case we are able to collect more information. Otherwise I will close it without action (it's in our internal logs, so if we detect similar reports, we can refer back to this).

Closing as commented. We can't reproduce the issue in our side, and reviewing user feedback received I don't see similar reports around bookmarks changing order.

We can reopen if we can find steps to reproduce or information that helps us find the root cause.
