I have a problem. How can I debug IDEasy?

In case I run into a bug or problem with IDEasy - how can I analyse and debug IDEasy so maybe I can find a solution myself before asking for support?

The first step to do is to run ide status what prints a lot of important information about your setup and state.

$ ide status
Updates are available for the settings repository. If you want to apply the latest changes, call "ide update"

You are offline. Check your internet connection and potential proxy settings.

• If you get a warning that you are offline you do not need to wonder if cloning or downloading from remote servers will fail.
  Maybe you have to configure a HTTP proxy server to get Internet connection properly working.
• If you see that a new release of IDEasy is available you should run the stated command to upgrade to the latest version because maybe the bug you are facing has already been fixed.
• If you have problems in your current development project and see that updates are available for your settings repository, run the stated command to update your project because maybe there was a configuration problem that was already fixed in your project
• If you get the wrong binaries (E.g. x64 binaries on arm64 computer, check that your OS and architecture is properly detected)

Further, you can use --debug or even --trace to get verbose logging. Please note that you need to provide this as arguments directly after the ide command. In other words use ide --trace install intellij (and NOT ide install --trace intellij).
This will give you a lot of additional logging output including commands that are executed.
So e.g. if some git command is called that fails, please try to run the same command manually.
If the git command itself looks sane but fails on your computer, maybe your git is misconfigured or something like that.
But if that git command is failing unexpectedly, then the problem has nothing to do with IDEasy.
Then you rather need git support instead of IDEasy support.
Only if IDEasy is calling the wrong command or passing the wrong arguments then there is a bug in IDEasy.

A common problem is that users create a project that automatically clones repositories that need authentication in git credential manager and even worse the user may not even have the required permission granted to clone the repo.
In all such cases there is no bug in IDEasy. Try to clone your git repo manually with git on the command-line.
If that also fails, do not blame IDEasy for it.

Once you have done your analysis and cannot help yourself, feel invited to ask a question in our discussion session or open a bug report.
Please include the output of ide status and debug/trace logs and details so we can understand your context and help you.
However, please avoid including project internal details and feel free to replace project names, etc. in your logs before submitting them since everything is open-source and visible world-wide to everybody.
