Why was the decision made to switch to using OS-specific programs? Framerate limitations? It would be nice to be able to use the _grab_qemu_monitor_image_fast as a fallback.

Nope, sorry. I can't remember the specifics. But if you want to PR it back or something as a wayland-only feature that would be cool!
