We've all seen the dreaded generic rectangle on our pebbles at one point or another. The default emoji set leaves a lot of gaps, even moreso in 2026, and this issue is currently only partially addressable with language pack workarounds.

AmberW on the rebble discord has created a really lovely set of replacement emojis for pebble that bring a refreshed but congruent style to existing pebble emojis, while also expanding the set to encompass way more images than the originals. The work so far only covers certain size categories, but implementing them in their current for would be a huge quality of life improvement!

This ticket hopes to address two things (which may require additional tickets):

• implementing Amber's emoji set, likely in a staged rollout by size
• addressing the bug(?) that currently prevents adding/displaying emojis outside of the current set's capabilities (someone with more experience can probably shine more light on this)

I'd be happy to contribute to a big bounty on this if it helps get the ball rolling (and I'm sure I'm not alone in that). We're seeing a lot of incredible updates for pebbles this year, and even incremental progress toward modern emoji support would be a huge win!

Tracked down a ticket from @hellcp in the rebble repo that had been troubleshooting why the "language pack" approach of adding additional emojis didn't seem to consistently work: pebble-dev/rebble-emojis#6

This was obviously a long time before the firmware got opened up (some activity did happen on that ticket last year), so perhaps there's an opportunity to better troubleshoot now? Or find an alternate solution to language packs when it comes to extended emoji support (whether or not it ends up being Amber's work). Either way, noting this may currently be a blocker for that extended support.

Hoping folks who are more actively involved will trickle over here at some point (I provided a link to this ticket), but in the meantime I hope this is helpful? Looks like Amber is planning to release the the emoji under the SIL open font license (https://openfontlicense.org/).
