Coqui TTS and ROCm

Hi all,

I am writing my notes here on what I needed to do to get coqui to work with my radeon 6700xt in Linux.

Prerequisite

Have the AMD GPU driver (FOSS kernel driver) installed as well as rocm.

To verify, use rocminfo

Installation

I made a folder, and a venv.

virtualenv venv
source venv/bin/activate

then I ran pip install coqui-tts

Now the tricky part, it installs the wrong torch and torchaudio...

you need to remove them and install the rocm ones.

pip uninstall torch torchaudio torchvision -y
pip install torch==2.8.0+rocm6.4 torchaudio==2.8.0+rocm6.4      --extra-index-url https://download.pytorch.org/whl/rocm6.4

As of the writing , we need to have torch 2.8.0 so rocm 6.4 is required.

Then, since I have a 6700xt, I ran the following commands to make it fake being another card for GPU acceleration in rocm.

export HSA_OVERRIDE_GFX_VERSION=10.3.0
export PYTORCH_ROCM_ARCH="gfx1031"

I run a little python test to see if it is working.

print("CUDA visible (ROCm):", torch.cuda.is_available())
print(torch.cuda.get_device_name(0))

For me, it gives

ROCm available: True
CUDA visible (ROCm): True
Radeon RX 6700 XT

Then to run the test

mkdir -p output/path
tts --text "Text for TTS" --out_path output/path/speech.wav

I will update when I have more pointers.
