AppImage version unable to handle a plus sign (+) in the password

I installed both the debian and appimage versions of converse on Ubuntu 22.04. Neither will allow me to connect to my xmpp account. The password contains the plus sign (+) within it. Based on the similar problem I read about here, conversejs/converse.js#3299, is that the problem here as well?

From other clients, and from the converse fullpage web site, I am able to connect just fine with that same password.

The desktop application has not yet been updated to include that bug fix. You can build your own updated version that includes the bug fix if you want it now. I will try and get an updated release put together in the next few weeks.

I'm working on the next Converse release, I can't promise when it'll be release, but I'm hoping soon. Conservatively I'd say within the next month. Might be worth it to wait until that release and then to update Converse Desktop as well.

Am I correct in assuming that the latest version (11.0.0) of converse desktop has not fixed this issue - this new version now allows amersands in the password, but still will not allow plus signs? I ask because using version 11.0.0 my credentials are rejected by converse desktop 11.0.0 (appimage) when I have a plus sign in the password.

I just tested this with the AppImage build and it works for me, with a password 123+456. I suspect there's a different issue here for you.

Press F12 to open the developer console and then check to see if there are any errors.

There are errors. I am not a tech person at all, so I have no idea what they are trying to say, I hope you can help with this. I've attached the log.

I created a test account with a + in the password with my Openfire server and had no issues logging in and using it.

My initial suggestion would be to try removing the folder containing the converse desktop settings / cache data and see if that fixes your issue. This should be ~/.config/Converse Desktop I believe.

Deleting the cache directory did not help, still the same problem.

(Don't know if this matters: In my case, the plus sign is the first character of the password.)

Sorry, I just now thought of this: In my password, in addition to having a plus sign in it, the only other symbolic character in it is a period. Could that be the problem? This password works fine with web browser converse, but fails with the appimage desktop version of converse. However, for another xmpp account I have, that password has a plus sign in it but no other symbolic character (no period), and for that account I do not get this problem, using the appimage I can successfully log in to that xmpp account.

If it works in the browser, then it should work in the desktop app just fine. The desktop app is essentially just an instance of chromium loading the same web application.

I did some more testing with the AppImage build and had no issues logging in with any password I tried. Sounds like it is a problem with that account or server and not ConverseJS.

I tried a new account on the same server (conversations.im) using a password with a period in it. Converse on the web allowed me to log in, but using the desktop app it failed. I also tried a password with a period in it for an account on a different server (dismail.de), and have the same error.

I'm not an expert in this stuff, what exactly should I be saying to the server administrators that would help them to fix whatever might be wrong with their servers that is refusing log ins from the Converse desktop app?

@dln949 I looked at the logs you posted, but didn't see anything that points me to the issue.

Do you maybe have more than one keyboard layout? I wonder whether you are thinking you're entering a + but it's actually something else due to the different keyboard layout that's active with the Desktop app versus the browser app.

If you're getting this issue with different servers, then I don't think it's a server issue.

If you can install .deb files, you can also try installing the .deb version and see whether you have the same issue there.

I have only one keyboard layout.

I do not experience this problem with the debian version 11 of converse desktop.
