Current Good Datasets

These are datasets we feel are good and should be used. Please add to this list as you find sources.

Crime Data

  • KCPD Crime Data 2015, data.kcmo.gov Crime data by address, type of crime, and over time. Eric: Crime Data is accurate, but rounded to the nearest 100 level block. So if a crime happened at 414 East 12th Street it’s location is noted as 400 East 12th Street. Police does this to protect victims’ identities.

Developers see the KCPD Crime Data 2015 API page it contains documentation on getting API keys, the updated API endpoints (search within_polygon), and documentation on the fields.

  • Sex Offender Registry, Missouri State Highway Patrol This page has a download tab, that downloads three .xls files.

Reported Issues

  • 311 Call Center Service Requests This data set contains call record data from the 311 call center in Kansas City, MO. This dataset used to be published under the name "KCMOPS311". This name was changed to make the dataset name more reflective of it's contents.

Developers see the 311 Call Center Service Requests API page it contains documentation on getting API keys, the updated API endpoints (search within_polygon), and documentation on the fields.

  • Property Violations Peter with Legal Aid went through different types of code violations and scored them, from weakest (1) to strongest (3).

Developers see the Property Violations API page it contains documentation on getting API keys, the updated API endpoints (search within_polygon), and documentation on the fields.

Business

You can also search through MO Open Data and see if they have any sort of information that would be useful.

  • Business License Holders, data.kcmo.org A business operating in the city must obtain an occupational license. This requirement applies to business entities regardless of their size or composition: corporation, partnership, association, company, individual, or any other type of business arrangement. A few professions, which are licensed by the state--most notably doctors, dentists, and lawyers--are not required to have occupational licenses. To verify if you need a business/occupational license, contact the Business License section at (816) 513-1135.

Traffic

Are there online services that will share their data? MARC may be another source.

Also of interest will be the Census Bureau Relationship Files which include the relationship of Census tabulation geography to zip code.

GIS Data -> http://maps.kcmo.org/apps/parcelviewer/ Is it contained in the Download tab > “Other?” I can display them on the map via Layers > TIF, PIEA, ETC.

About City and State

Future Datasets

Code Violations

Open Property Violations Pre Feb 2010, data.kcmo.gov We would like to see over time to help identify problem properties.

Comment: Eric R. Working on it! Should be our highest quality data yet. Also, about 250,000-300,000 observations in the dataset.

Demographic data

Demographic data recent - ethnicity, race, median household income, age, education, owned versus rental, multi-family versus single family, population count and density.

Comment: Eric R. We are trying to assemble this in house but our timeline is 1-2 months out. It’s fairly challenging for us to assemble this data. The Census is where we get our info. We are going to talk with NYC and see how they pull their ACS/Census data. I’m guessing it’s via API.

Property value

KIVA This will be a great dataset. We are actively working with Jackson County to create an automatic feed of this data from them to our servers. Data would be available with keys to parcel id and such. We will have all 4 counties worth of data once we get Jackson counties feed built. The Data would come from our Treasury division. You may be able to scrape it via the county APN -> For example > http://maps.jacksongov.org/PropertyReport/propertyReport.cfm?pid=12-940-05-03-00-0-00-000

Looking for sources

Absentee owners

A list of absentee owners by address - currently they go through KIVA and find properties where the property address does not match the owners address. Buildings might be a way to find, it is a list of buildings, housefacts, last updated September 25, 2014. Contains Building ID, Parcel ID, Building Type, address of building, Lat, Lng, owner name & address.

Foreclosures - county/state may be sources.

Population

Population / number of households moving in/out of a neighborhood (census data, property tax data, car registrations, etc.) Most of this would come from the ACS and Census data. Would be super interesting to see this over time. However, neighborhood boundaries shift over time too. Our neighborhood boundaries are presently mapped to census neighborhoods.

Zoning variances

Eric R. is check with planning on this but it may be a long-term project.

State Data

Kansas City Metropolitan Area Data

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are 14 counties in the metropolitan Kansas City area. The anchor city for this area is Kansas City, MO. So far most of the data gathered by Code for KC comes from there and from the Unified Government of Wyandotte County on the Kansas side of the state line.

In order to serve the entire metro area, data from other cities and counties would be useful. In addition to the anchor city, there are four other large cities in the metro area. All have populations of at least 100,000:

  • Overland Park, KS -- For more information about access to open records, contact the city's Freedom of Information Officer at 913-895-6150.
  • Kansas City, KS (included in the Unified Government of Wyandotte County) -- Open data is available through UG Open Data. Maps and tabular data are available through the Unified Government's DotMaps Public Web Mapper. To make a an open records request, contact the Clerk's office.
  • Olathe, KS -- To make an open records request, contact the City Clerk.
  • Independence, MO -- To obtain public records, either contact the appropriate city office informally or submit an official request to the City Clerk.

Counties in the metro area (in order of population size) are:

  • Jackson County, MO -- Information about how to obtain public records in accordance with the state's Sunshine Law is available HERE.
  • Johnson County, KS -- Online public datasets are available through the county's Automated Information Mapping System. To make an open recors request, contact the County Manager.
  • Clay County, MO -- Information about how to obtain public records in accordance with the state's Sunshine Law is available from the County Administrator.
  • Wyandotte County, KS (included in the Unified Government of Wyandotte County) -- See Kansas City, KS listed above.
  • Cass County, MO --
  • Platte County, MO -- Information about how to obtain public records in accordance with the state's Sunshine Law is available from the County Clerk.
  • Leavenworth County, KS
  • Miami County, KS -- Information about how to obtain public records in accordance with the state's Open Records Act is available from the County Clerk.
  • Lafayette County, MO -- GIS maps are available HERE.
  • Ray County, MO -- Information about how to obtain public records in accordance with the state's OSunshine Law is available from the County Clerk.
  • Clinton County, MO --
  • Bates County, MO
