State not persisting on certain elements when parent filtered

In the searchable parent targets I have checkboxes. If I uncheck a few and begin filtering, these targets are hidden (because no match). When I remove the filter and the hidden elements return, the previously unchecked checkboxes are now checked.

Any ideas as to why?
