Struggling to get function runtime to cooperate with my PHP framework - Error "Handler /var/task/index.php must return a function or object handler"

I am setting up the SQS example here https://bref.sh/docs/use-cases/sqs with my PHP app built on Codeigniter.

I am able to run a properly functioning version of the SQS example with Lambda processing my code correctly if I return the SQS Class Handler Instance (return new Lambdahandler();) before I load the Codeigniter framework files. However I need to be able to use various functions provided by the framework when handling the Lambda data. Currently either the Lambda function processes correctly or Codeigniter loads correctly, but not both together.

When my Lambda function runs I get the error: "Fatal error: Bref\Runtime\HandlerNotFound: Handler /var/task/index.php must return a function or object handler..."

I have tried many different iterations for loading the Lambdahandler function within my Codeigniter app structure but I have not had any luck so far.

Below is an example of an iteration that is failing:

Separately, if I load the above consumer function on my localhost including print_r(new Lambdahandler()); I see the following output:

)

Does anyone have any idea how I can load my framework files and have Lambda recognize my Lambdahandler function? Does return new Lambdahandler(); have to be located in the index.php (handler) file? Thanks

It seems like I have to use the return statement: return new Lambdahandler() in the handler file otherwise the function is not recognized on Lambda.
