Main menu cannot be open on certain situations

I've faced a situation where I could not open the main menu. Restarting Cockpit didn't fix it.

The error that appeared when the menu was clicked can be seen below:

Humnnnn, this actually happened during my tests with #2672. This needs to be investigated before merging that PR.

Actually just happened to me in master as well.

Ok, it was not related to the PR. It is indeed a critical bug in master.
