I'm assuming that I can have private files - how do file deletions work? What happens when a user dies and doesn't delete their files? Does the approach scale over hundreds of years and billions of users?

To keep file private the user client encrypts the shards before they are sent out to the network. The cypher is derived from EC private key and can be regenerated along with the EC key pair from the seed phrase.

The files shards will exist until a signed delete request is made by same address that signed the original shard. The current code will keep 3 healthy shards for files that are actively being used because it runs a health audit each time a shard is requested. So the shards on a dead node will migrate naturaly to other nodes.
