How Do You Control Sleep Mode?

Turning off sleep mode is easy. I have an automation that is triggered at 05:50 to turn on my light with 1% brightness, red (the same as my sleep mode settings), 0 transition and then turn off sleep mode to bring the lights up gradually before my alarm goes off.

Turning sleep mode on is a little harder. I have a script to turn on sleep mode and then turn the lights after the sleep mode transition finishes, but sometimes my partner just turns the lights off immediately.

I could create an automation that triggers when if the lights turn off after 21:00 and someone is home to turn on sleep mode. (I don't want sleep mode to turn on and for me to return to a dark house if we're out late). But I'm probably missing something
