Error in AWS IoT policy creation

Step 5 under "Setting up AWS IoT"
AWS policy doesn't seem to accept the resource value listed in this guide

I have tried the following combinations

\. Press *Create**

All give the error of:
"This policy failed vaildation. Please correct syntax errors and try again. Policy document is Malformed: The following resources are invalid : "

Also you are forced to set the policy as "allow" or "deny" which I've assumed should be "allow"

I had the same trouble understanding the instructions. I tried this (below) and it worked.
a. Select the ‘Add statement’ button
b. In the ‘Action’ text field enter iot:*
c. In the ‘Resources’ text field enter *
d. Press ‘Create’ button
