install is failing when using brew install xcodesorg/made/xcodes

We use xcodes in automation and have been using brew to install xcodes as part of those pipelines. We noticed today that it was failing during some test runs but it did work a little over a week ago.

brew install xcodesorg/made/xcodes FAILS see below
brew install xcodes WORKS

Did something change?

Using the recommended way from this github site results in:

Having the same issue. Ideally xcodesorg/made/xcodes should insalled a precompiled binary from the release and don't try to build it.

Had to download from https://github.com/XcodesOrg/xcodes/releases/download/1.6.2/xcodes.zip instead as a workaround.

Adding a followup, just retried this morning seeing same behavior. Only works when using single name xcodes but I see I forgot to add that output to the original so its below

Seeing the same. However, since I was migrating from App Store Xcode the brew install xcodes worked fine as well. After running xcodes install 26.1.1 I did have to also run sudo xcode-select -s /Applications/Xcode-26.1.1.app/Contents/Developer or else I was unable to run xcodes runtimes.

We use it in automation as a one liner to do it all or did you have to do that even after that?

Our command looks like: xcodes install 26.1.1 --experimental-unxip --select --empty-trash && xcodebuild -downloadAllPlatforms && xcodebuild -runFirstLaunch

The xcodesorg/made/xcodes formulae doesn't reference any of the newer OS versions, and so will lead to building from source. Where as the already mentioned xcodes formula matches recent OS versions and will fetch the pre-built binary.

Building from source now fails as it appears recent version of command line tools has moved xcbuild to /Library/Developer/CommandLineTools/usr/lib/swift/pm/SwiftBuild.framework/Versions/A/Support/xcbuild which is just a symlink to swbuild

I want my xcodes install to work

brew install xcodes instead of brew install xcodesorg/made/xcodes

How do we fix when building from source?

Need to cater for the new location of xcbuild (swbuild)

Sorry, I was confused with brew install --cask xcodes which uses the same name. brew install xcodes properly installs the CLI tool seemingly using a precompiled binary. Anyway the documentation seems to be misleading, as you can read the following in the main README:

Homebrew (Preferred)

brew install xcodesorg/made/xcodes

These are Developer ID-signed and notarized release builds and don't require Xcode to already be installed in order to use.

@jgongo that is the confusing part and why I opened the issue. the documented way you listed suddenly stopped working but is still on the main page and shifted over to just brew install xcodes

were using this now but still a bit confused as to the change in formula name.

Is there any update regarding this? I would like to work with the tapped version instead of the version in brew.
