BeeGFS 8.0.0 now available 🚀

I am very happy to announce that we have just released BeeGFS 8.0.0 to our public repositories. I want to thank the entire team behind BeeGFS for investing a lot of work and dedication to make this release as big as it is! We hope you like it as much as we do and are excited to hear your feedback.

BeeGFS 8 comes packed with a lot of modernization, a new command line utility, exciting new data management functionality and a lot more. Be sure to check out our full release notes for detailed information about the new and updated functionality.

Before you upgrade to BeeGFS 8.0.0 from an older BeeGFS release, please read our upgrade guide carefully to make sure all the prerequisites are met to make the upgrade go smoothly.

I'm puzzled by "Downloading empty files is not currently supported" (Release Notes, Known Issues) - does this mean that touch x; cat x; vi x won't work?

Also, we're planning to upgrade machines currently running Ubuntu 20.04 with HWE kernels (and BeeGFS 7.4.x) to 24.04 - are we supposed to drop HWE completely to be able to run 8.0?

There is no restriction with creating or interacting with empty files in BeeGFS created using touch x or similar.

That restriction is specific to the Remote Storage Targets feature only. For example if you have an S3 bucket with an object that is 0 bytes, you cannot currently use beegfs remote pull to bring that object into BeeGFS. This is because we download objects using byte-range fetches so downloads for large objects can be distributed across multiple machines. We have a number of improvements around pulling object(s) into BeeGFS planned including making this work with empty files.
