Biofilms are dynamic, environment-modifying systems. Synthetic circuits reveal patterning, but most work captures endpoint structures. We followed development continuously and found post-growth traveling waves that do not require engineered circuit dynamics, supporting nutrient recovery as a quantitative explanation.
