Working with large repos (many NeogitConsole messages can disrupt the flow)

I have recently started using Neogit and have been enjoying it, thank you to all the maintainers and contributors!

Yesterday I was using Neogit with a large repository (nixpkgs) for the first time.

Opening and rendering the NeogitStatus for the first time took a good 5 seconds or so, and the NeogitConsole popped up and stole focus with the following:

Command "git --no-pager -c color.ui=always --no-optional-locks describe --long --tags HEAD" running for more than: 2.1 seconds

In the git config for this repo I have status.showuntrackedfiles set to no/false so that git status is much quicker. However I'm not aware of any such flag/config for git describe.

Similarly, NeogitLogView opened in a background tab and I saw the following in NeogitConsole:

For NeogitStatus I think disabling auto_refresh should help somewhat. Does anyone have any other ideas? Or suggestions for how we could improve performance for repos such as this one with Neogit?

It may also be helpful if there is a way to not have NeogitConsole pop up and steal focus, I understand that sometimes big repos are just going to be slow.

Running git gc helped a lot with my case. It took over 4 minutes but now the status and log views are rendering quickly enough to not generate any warnings. I hope this can be helpful to others in the future, but I am still interested to hear if anyone has other thoughts or ideas on this topic.

I sadly missed this before, from the docs:

  -- The time after which an output console is shown for slow running commands
  console_timeout = 2000,
  -- Automatically show console if a command takes more than console_timeout milliseconds
  auto_show_console = true,

I have not tested yet, but overriding those options would seem to handle this scenario!
