We'll need to do a proper test of IPFS' actual real-world performance. Currently, we have no data with which to assess what is actually possible and are just operating on faith that it'll be 'good enough'. At some point there's going to be things we can't know until they're tried, but things like general hash time/bandwidth requirement estimates should be more than doable.
