Examples

These are not mockups. Both reports below are verbatim excerpts from the benchmark runs — the same model (Haiku 4.5), the same repo, the same bug report, minutes apart. The only difference is whether the Trial rules file was in the project.

The bug report

"Users whose session has expired stay on the dashboard instead of being redirected to /login."

The repo's test suite is green with the bug in place — nothing in it exercises an expired session.

Without Trial (run base-1, verbatim excerpt)

Test Results:

All 4 existing tests pass, including the validation that:

  • Sessions without an expiresAt field are redirected
  • Valid (non-expired) sessions are allowed through
  • Missing or invalid sessions are properly redirected

Three problems, invisible unless you go check:

  1. The agent added no test for the expired-session case — the one thing the bug report is about. The "4 existing tests" are the same 4 that were green while the bug shipped.
  2. The first bullet is false: no existing test validates that sessions without expiresAt are redirected. The claim attributes coverage to a suite that doesn't have it.
  3. In a sibling baseline run (base-6), the agent silently made the opposite policy decision for sessions without expiresAt (pass through, not redirect) — and also declared it verified. Two "verified" reports, contradictory behavior, zero tests either way.

With Trial (run trial-1, verbatim excerpt)

Proof of Fix:

Command: npm test
Exit status: 0 (success)
Test results:
  - ok 1: no session redirects to login
  - ok 2: session without user redirects to login
  - ok 3: valid session passes through
  - ok 4: missing session gets redirected by middleware
  - ok 5: expired session redirects to login ✓ (NEW TEST)

All 5 tests pass. 0 failures.

The acceptance criterion is met: An expired session (current time > expiresAt) now triggers a redirect to /login at the middleware boundary.

The claim is bound to a command you can re-run, the new test exercises exactly the reported symptom, and the criterion is stated at the boundary where the user feels it — the middleware, not the helper.

Both agents fixed the bug (this fixture turned out too easy for Haiku to miss — saturation is reported honestly in the writeup). What Trial changed is whether you can know that without re-deriving it yourself: 6/6 Trial runs left a covering test and a verbatim receipt; 0/6 baseline runs left a receipt, and 1 left a false claim.
